Ready to Set Sail? Tips to Get Your Boat Prepared

Going out on the ocean or even out on the lake in your boat can be a whole lot of fun. Whether you like to go out alone, with family or with a big group of friends, you probably enjoy showing off your boat from time to time.

However, there are some things you need to do before you let people on your boat, especially if you’re going more than a few minutes from the shore. Use this guide to make sure you’re prepared for everything that could come up.

Ready to Set Sail

1. Make sure you have all of the safety equipment that you need on your boat and that it’s in good working condition. What you need varies by vessel and the trip you’re taking, but basics like working life vests, rafts and blankets are always important. Check your boat thoroughly to make certain you have what you need before heading out.

2. Buy and keep lots of food and water on your boat. You don’t want perishable food, but healthy items like organic snacks can make everybody more comfortable, especially if you end up in the water longer than you thought you would be. This is especially important if you’re out with kids.

3. Tell somebody on land where you’re going to be going and when you’ll be back. If you’re going out for more than a day it’s a good idea to leave a list of passengers and any stops you might be making with this person as well.
